Helicopter Hiking in Canada

Recently divorced, I was seeking an adventure. My first idea was to take a train trip from Toronto to Vancouver, but there were no seats available. My travel agent recommended that I join a Tauck Tour that included stops at Lake Louise and Jasper and a final stay at a ski lodge in British Columbia. There the group would be flown by helicopter to the top of a mountain. Instead of skiing down, we would hike. The travel agent assured me this was the type of trip that would attract single men. Hah!

I live in Central Florida. It is flat! My legs had not experienced walking up - or down - a hill for twenty years. I tried to get in shape by hiking around Lake Underhill in Orlando. A lot of good that did! It was flat! I also chose not to buy a pair of boots, knowing a pair would be lent to me. One problem: I have a long, very narrow foot that does not like a size medium. I should have realized I would not be fitted in Size 10 AAAA.

After flying to Edmonton, I joined the group. Taulk Tours may seem expensive, but it is top drawer. We had luxurious accommodations and, with our choice of anything on the menu, gourmet meals.

Our first stop was the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise located in Banff National Park in Alberta. This huge edifice was built in 1890 by the Canadian Pacific Railway. It has breathtaking mountain views and a pristine lake. Again I tried to prepare myself for helicopter- hiking by walking along the shores of the lake. The terrain was -- you guessed it -- flat.

After a few days we journeyed to the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge in Jasper National Park, also in Alberta. Though more rustic than Chateau Lake Louise, the accommodations were comfortable, the meals excellent, and the views outstandingly beautiful. An added feature were the elk. Hundreds and hundreds of elk live in Jasper, and they have the right-of-way.

Although I had nightmares about an elk charging into my room, our stay in Jasper came to an end without my having a close encounter with an elk. We were flown by helicopter to the ski lodge in British Columbia. There we were divided into groups according to what our guides thought were our hiking abilities. I started out being a member of the most athletic group and was given a pair of loaner boots. After each hike, I was demoted. My aching Florida legs could not handle going downhill, nor could my feet tolerate the ill-fitting boots. One day, however, I excelled. We were dropped off on a glacier to hike to the other side and -- guess what-- ithe glacier was flat!

By the way, my fantasy, or my travel agent's fantasy, that I would meet interesting single men on this trip did not pan out. I was the only person traveling alone. Almost everyone else was a married couple, and most were twenty years older than I. There were two men traveling together, but they were holding hands. Oh well, better luck next time!

Although I do avoid hiking down mountains, I have made some interesting trips. In fact, at one point, I returned to the Jasper Park Lodge. At that point, I learned an elk had tried to enter the cottage of one of the guides - just like I had dreamed. Thanks for following me!

Yes this has been a great read and many thanks for writing it! I myself live on a mountain but I would not dream of even trying to walk up or down it so I sympathise with your predicament!

Pleasant hub, sounds maybe not all you could hope for. I am a firm believer if you can't get there in my Jeep you probably don't want to walk there, least around here. We been bumping the 100 mark for a few days with the mercury. A trip across a glacier in my jeep of course, would be welcome. I'd welcome you but if you been reading James, you've been looking a while and if you just got here well, welcome I hope you enjoy it as I have. Blessings, 50

Izzy, a couple of years ago I thought about buying a log cabin in the mountains of North Carolina. Then I discovered I am almost as afraid of heights as I am of roaches!

Mystery, what an adventure! One might expect there would have been at least one eligible bachelor on such a physical holiday. Goes to show, though. They probably hang out in Vegas or - Orlando!

I have to share this with you - about your shoe size. My feet took after my father's side of the family (Mother sometimes referred to them as 'square Dutchmen' - referring to shape! Her side, though had the slim feet. In fact, her sister, Annie Laurie, described her own feet as 'rabbit's feet'! Do you relate to that? LOL. '->

Hey Mystery, you traveled to a beautiful majestic part of our country. Jasper and Banff are beautiful. I have been there many times and enjoyed it every time. Lake Louise is wonderful, I have canoed around it a few times. Banff Springs Hotel is another great hotel to stay at. I can never get enough of the mountains, now matter where they are. Thanks for visiting. Great hub.

Nellieanna, thanks for commenting. One of my nicknames is "Little Rabbit"! When I wore heels in my younger days, it was extremely difficult to find shoes (only one store in town carried my size) and they were never cheap!

Saddlerider,"majestic" is the perfect adjective! I have traveled a lot, and I have never encountered anything more beautiful than that area of your country. I envy you for being able to canoe around Lake Louise.

In my hub on Athens, I said I thought single travelers were often slighted. They are given tiny rooms or views of walls. I did not feel that way in Canada. My accommodations were fine.

I am happy that you enjoyed my country, like yours we have so much beauty. Let's pray that our governments will change their tactics of self destruction. Bravo to keeping our planet green and having Greenpeace to moderate. Our beautiful Rockies California and Canadian rockies are breath taking. Thanks for the follow my friend. Peace and hugs.

I do agree, Saddlerider. I hate to see nature destroyed. I read your profile and remembered that many years ago, I had a short vacation in Montreal, probably during a Christmas vacation. I think I stayed at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel that connected to an underground sytem. Thus, I could visit a few places without freezing to death. On the recommendation of a friend, one night I went to a restaurant called Les Halles (?) for dinner. I don't remember the meal, but I do remember the wonderful bread and butter and the most delicious onion soup I have ever had! Yummy! Do these places still exist? I love your country, East and West!

DisneyVacation, I promise that you'll love the scenery of the Canadian Rockies. And even though I was not good at it, I enjoyed the hiking, too. It was a unique vacation.
